Things and activities to do in Sicily

As one of the world’s most active volcanoes and Europe’s highest active volcano, Mount Etna is a must-visit when in Sicily. Found on the southeast coast and around a three hour drive from our Club Med Cefalù resort, there’s a melting pot of sights and unforgettable activities to be revelled in on the volcano.

For hikers of every ability, set off on a guided morning hike of the volcano to discover lava flows and impressive old craters, as well as exploring a lava cave by headlamp. At only a 1 hour 30 minute ascent, it’s the ideal day trip for couples, families, or as a solo escapade. For those who prefer to explore via wheel than foot, Jeep tours of Mount Etna acquaint passengers with the verdant flora and fauna and cover more ground. Some tours polish off the experience with a tasting of the local honey, wine and liqueurs. Alternatively, cable car rides are available up Mount Etna for a completely unrivalled view of the volcano.

Would a trip to Sicily be complete without visiting its relaxing beaches? In short: definitely not. And at only a two and a half hour drive from our Club Med Cefalù resort, a day trip to one of Sicily’s best beaches, Spiaggia di Cala Rossa, is completely doable.

A true Sicilian escape, Spiaggia di Cala Rossa is surrounded by pristine, blue waters made for a peaceful swim. If visitors plan on spending a day by the water, we recommend aqua shoes for protection against the rocky surface. Paying a visit between the morning and afternoon is best, as this spot is free, meaning it can fill up quickly.

For those who prefer to admire the turquoise waters rather than get up close and personal, boat trips around the Favignana area are available to admire the beach from uncharted angles. Learn about the history of the area and indulge in local aperitifs aboard some boat trips. Or, visit the most beautiful coves of Favignana and Levanzo and head out in the blue on a snorkelling expedition.

For a less than conventional Sicilian excursion, donkey trekking up Mount Etna is also on the cards as well as hiking up the volcano. The perfect activity for families, young children, and adventure-seekers, donkey treks are available between May and October.

Rove amongst the epitome of Italian scenery and take in verdant panoramic views amid vineyards, olive trees, and a 600 year old crater. Choose between riding atop your personal donkey companion or walking alongside them whilst enjoying a different experience in nature. Set upon the Temenite hill in Southeastern Sicily sits the Greek Theatre of Syracuse, overlooking the modern city of Syracuse itself. Still in use today, those lucky enough to visit between May and July can take an authentic step back in time and watch a Greek theatre show as intended: alongside exquisite scenery.
