The Tegalalang Rice Terrace is a series of rice fields planted in terraces on the hillside. Using traditional Balinese irrigation system, these rice fields require significantly less water than regular rice fields.

It's one of the most famous rice fields in Bali thanks to the beautiful view you get when overlooking the valley. The endless green terraces turn the valley into a large hanging garden, offering great photo opportunities.

This valley is located 20 minutes north of Ubud. You can quite easily travel there yourself if you have a scooter or car since the road from Ubud is mostly straight. Renting a scooter or motorcycle is popular among tourists, so you can consider that. Just remember to wear a helmet at all times.

If you're staying closer to the capital, Denpasar, you would need to travel for about an hour and 15 minutes which makes hiring a taxi or transport from your hotel a better idea. The Tegalalang Rice Terrace is about one and a half hours away from the major beaches in the south, making it still quite accessible. The best times to visit the Tegalalang Rice Terrace are early morning and late afternoon so you can avoid the crowd and the heat from the sun. However, the rice fields are the most stunning during sunrise and sunset.

When the sun is low in the sky, the sunlight streams through the palm trees to create an ethereal environment that you have to see for yourself. Plus, it'll make for excellent photographs. Just be sure to check the weather so you don't have clouds or rain to ruin the view for you. Also, the valley is beautiful year-round even when there's no rice.

Visiting a rice terrace in Bali is a straightforward affair, but there are tips that can make your trip more fun and comfortable. Here are some of them:

• Bring water if you plan to explore the rice fields. It can get quite warm especially when the sun is up.

• Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are easy to walk in. If you plan to do a lot of walking close to the paddy, avoid wearing long dresses as they can get muddy.

• Be careful when walking up and down the terraces as the steps can become slippery, especially if it has rained the night before.

• Be respectful and don't damage anything including the crops. After all, the farmers are really earning a living with their rice.

• Be sure to check out the Bali swings and the Love Bali sign. There are numerous swings around the valley where you can swing high up to enjoy better views. A three to five-minute swing costs between 100,000 to 150,000 IDR. You can find the swings and the Love Bali sign close to the roadside, so you don't have to walk down the steps to get there.
